Myst Online Uru Live is a free MMO with an unusual play style. Search around a huge world, collecting clues and symbols to uncover the fate of an ancient civilisation.
The original Myst was a slow paced point and click game which became hugely successful in the late 90's, a style of game which did not lend itself easily to online play. Myst Online Uru Live was the uneasy attempt at moving to an MMO style, making a series of changes to core gameplay features. Gone is the first person mode, replaced by an awkward third person perspective. The more linear exploration is replaced by huge open levels which are explored painfully slowly on foot. This resulting awkward combination never truly became popular beyond hardcore fans. Myst Online Uru Live is still active and available today for free download. Travelling across massive landscapes to uncover new symbols is a bizarre experience, only surpassed in strangeness by finding another player in one of the cities. While the sheer amount of backstory and information, as well as innovative concepts, packed into the game is impressive, it ultimately feels empty and pointless.
Myst Online Uru Live is an interesting side note in the history of gaming, the strange tale of a point and click adventure trying to become an MMO. The fact it is still online is stranger still.
